1024x768 fixed
July 24, 2008, 10:39:25 AM by LordVermin.
This layout should fix any issues for people in 1024x768 resolution in both IE7 and FF3.
If you're still using IE6.. don't say anything. Don't even look at me.

Wood grain retro = snazzy
July 14, 2008, 02:14:49 AM by LordVermin.
Yes, it's another new design. I've been wanting to put something like this up for quite some time, only just now did I find the motivation to actually do it.
Unlike usual, though, there are some links and sections of SOP.com that are NOT returning this go-round. They are as follows:
Destroy All Whistles - When this game sees more work and/or is finished, this section will return. Until then, it serves no purpose being online.
Waaargh! - I want to re-capture all the sound samples in better quality. If I ever get around to it, this section will return.
Bobo - This probably won't ever return. Those of you who have been around long enough will remember it and it'll be our little in-joke. As it should be.
Leonard Nimoy's Sacrelige - This is available on Google Video and YouTube, no sense in keeping a copy mirrored here.
Arcade - This will be returning eventually but is offline right now because the info/pics are horribly out of date. Once I get it updated, it'll be back.
The RD's Mail & Hogan sections are still being converted to work with the new format and will be back soon.
Hope you like the new look. Do me a favor (if you care): poke around a bit. Go revisit your favorite section. Let me know if you see any problems. Bad links, missing images, SQL or php errors, stuff not lining up, whatever. There will be other surprises to be found in this layout, too, but I'm not telling what they are or where they can be found...

Diablo3
June 28, 2008, 07:13:53 PM by LordVermin.

Upon watching the announcement of Diablo 3 this morning on the live feed from Paris, my brother Weehawk said it was like waking up from an 8 year nightmare.
He's more right than not. The last few years have been really abysmal for video games. Most of us who play PC games have been spending our time on (shudder) MMO's like WoW or Age of Conan, games that qualify more as "better than staring at the wall" than they do quality entertainment. The console games have been so bad I just now found the motivation to buy in to the "next gen", getting myself a PS3 and a Wii over the last month. The PS3 edged out the 360 mainly because, if I'm going to buy a console for $300+, I'd rather it not catch on fire. I can't stand Sony, but what choice are we left with these days? We're choosing between the lesser of evils rather than choosing anything good, and it's getting harder and harder to find a game on any platform that isn't in some way associated with EA. When you're mired down in a year in which GTA4, Super Smash Brothers Brawl and MGS4 are going to be duking it out for Game of the Year honors, you know the whole industry is in trouble.
GTA4 would be the easy choice, except that it is hamstrung by some utterly ridiculous combat mechanic implementations and mission design decisions whose inclusion in what is otherwise a fantastic game boggles my mind. Something as simple as making the R1 auto-lock actually lock on to the nearest person I'm facing instead of on a randomly selected person anywhere in a two-block radius would remedy nearly all my problems with it, but Rockstar REALLY screwed the pooch on that one. Add to that the missions that require you to chase down invincible cars that move and handle like K.I.T.T or destroy a limousine full of "thugs" who are more like a genetic combination of John Rambo and Bullseye armed with machine guns and the Matrix-esque way every single car on the road can magically morph into a cop car when your back is turned and you've got a recipe for ritual suicide.
SSBB would be a good choice if it were not hands-down the cheapest game I've ever played. Even Mega Man, the previous cheap bullshit title holder, is left looking at the enormous, heaping mound of bullshit that is SSBB and going "God DAMN." As an interactive Nintendo museum, SSBB is godly. As a game, it fails on nearly every single possible level, reducing "gameplay" to mashing buttons as blurs of multicolored light fly around the screen, eventually popping up a big message letting you know if you "succeeded" or "failed". I put those in quotes because, let's be honest, how can you really call an outcome that is decided almost entirely by luck a success or a failure? SSBB is the video game equivalent to huffing helium: it's worth a few laughs when you're with your friends, but ultimately, it's dumb and pointless.
MGS4 isn't even a game, so it doesn't warrant discussion. Black IcE and I will probably rent it this coming weekend just to spend a few minutes laughing at it before beating ToeJam & Earl a few times. On second thought, if I'm going to spend eight bucks to rent an action movie, I'll probably rent a GOOD one.
The announcement of Diablo 3 by Blizzard finally gives me something to look forward to. It's nice to be able to hear a game announcement and be happy about it instead of dying a little inside, like I did when I heard about "Guitar Hero: Aerosmith" and "Gears of War 2". Am I really the only one out there who thinks we should announce a new "Rock Band" game and just kill everyone who shows up to buy it? We've got to have some old WW2-era flamethrowers sitting around in some warehouses somewhere, why not get some use out of them?
Regardless of what other atrocities the industry pushes on us in the next year, Diablo 3 will be at least one shining diamond amongst the shit. For that, my love/hate relationship with Blizzard has swung back to "love".
At least, for now.
